Yu-Chen Wang attended Goldsmiths College and Chelsea College of Art & Design, London. Wang creates complex and intricate drawings with pencil and watercolour, but also extends her practice into artists’ books, films, performances, collage and installation. She is interested in otherworldly images, frequently inspired by architecture and science fiction. The amorphous shapes and wispy lines in her drawings evoke alternative places and surreal landscapes, but when looking closely one can sometimes make out subtle references to real-life machines, sea creatures, flowers or ships. Wang’s films, performances and books expand on this fictional world where her characters are whisked away to the parallel universe captured in her absorbing drawings.

For TB2014 Wang will present her new project titled This is the end... as a reaction to her apocalyptic anxiety of a possible global collapse – the fear that if everything comes to an end, but we survive, what will the world look like and how will we live in it? Wang’s large-scale drawing installation will be exhibited in multiple locations throughout the museum. Her drawings will create a futuristic techno-scape, a mise-en-scène where humans and non-human are interconnected, where we live with nature in a new way. 

This quasi-scientific exploration will envision a landscape in a newly founded Anthropocene, creating a moment of ‘pause’ from the chaotic big stir. Wang's grayscale pencil drawings capture things that are in suspension, frozen in time and space – a moment on the edge of collapse or in the process of transformation. Her fictional story, also weaving throughout the museum, is seen as a sketch for this alternative landscape, providing a backdrop for her envisioned future.

Her work has been exhibited widely, including exhibitions at Hayward Gallery, London; Cornerhouse, Manchester; Galerie L'Oeil de Poisson, Quebec City; FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais, France; Camden Arts Centre, London; Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), London; Darklight Film Festival, Dublin; and Videonale, Berlin. Forthcoming solo exhibitions include 'Nostalgia for the Future' at Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei (2015) and a residency at the Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester (2015).
