Whispers  on  the  Horizon
地平線上的低吟
born in 1923, Qingshui, Taichung – died in 2005

An elderly man cradles a small cage; nearby children lean in, curious. YANG Chih-Hsin stands just outside the circle, an unseen observer, allowing the scene to speak for itself.

The 1950s were defined by martial law and restricted freedom and expression. Perhaps the caged bird could be seen as a quiet metaphor for this tension: constraint held in the same frame.
Traveling across Taiwan, YANG worked with a photojournalist’s clarity and a gentle warmth. His images carry a strong sense of the moment, empathetic yet measured — small narratives that invite us to look, and to feel what might be missing.

A Pet Bird, 1957, Gelatin silver print, 51 × 61 cm, Collection of Taipei Fine Arts Museum.
