Lina Lapelytė
Study of Slope (aka The Mutes) is a musical performance and multichannel sound installation with people who describe themselves as tone-deaf. In this version — created for the Taipei Biennial—the installation is set within a garden shaped by a local plant often dismissed as a weed, despite its healing properties. Within the garden are custom-made porcelain aslant shoes. The lyrics, taken from Living in a Land by London-based writer and educator Sean Ashton and explore themes of identity and absence. The work appears as a karaoke soundscape with lyrics in English and a local language, and at the end of the Biennial it culminates in a live performance.
Lapelytė’s work is rooted in music and explores pop culture, gender roles, and vulnerability. She works with trained and untrained performers to create shared, inclusive experiences.
Performances will take place on March 28 and 29, 2026.
