Hiraki Sawa
To create “memories of the future,” Hiraki Sawa collected stories from people whose lives suddenly changed. During his research for the Taipei Biennial 2025, he spent time at an elder care home, that cares for Japanese who remained in Taiwan after the war, or Taiwanese elders educated under the Japanese system, in Taiwan, and in an earthquake-damaged area in Japan, listening closely and gathering fragments of personal history. These moments—sometimes vivid, sometimes fading—form the basis of his site-specific installation Nowhere in Myriad Layers, which combines video projections on colored linen with sculptural elements.
Hiraki Sawa transforms individual memories into anonymous, dreamlike narratives. Through this process, he explores how shared experiences shape how we remember the past, experience the present, and imagine the future.
