Random Access is set in a city where, after a data center crashes, a driver and passenger get lost on the highway and enter a broken digital world of memories and dreams. The film resembles science fiction but shows the fast changes in Guizhou, China. The driver, Hongyan, is the artist’s mother and a retired taxi driver who feels lost as the city changes. Her husband, the seemingly unknown passenger in this film, remains emotionally distant. They are physically close, yet disconnected, playing real yet fictionalized versions of themselves.
He Zike incorporates personal memories into her research and fieldwork. Her practice uses narratives to show the disorder of daily life in a rapidly changing world.
