Afra Al Dhaheri
born in 1988, Abu Dhabi - lives and works in Abu Dhabi
For Weighted PAUSE, Afra Al Dhaheri uses thick ropes to create a sculpture. They form shapes that seem to grow from the wall and interact with the room around them.
The ropes are constructed into forms that result from slow, repeated actions, shaped through layering, undoing, and rebuilding. Through the installation, the artist aims to create a space for reflection. The title encourages people to rest, feel their own weight, and be present in the moment—either alone or with others.
Al Dhaheri’s work is shaped by her experiences growing up in the UAE—a place of rapid change. The artist expresses a longing for communal slowing down, where rest is not a luxury but a necessity.
