On June 19, 1995, navy private Huang kuo-chang went missing, for reasons that were unclear, after his ship left harbor. At the time, the military authorities claimed that Huang had gone AWOL, wearing civilian clothes and carrying luggage. Several days later, however, mainland Chinese fishermen retrieved Huang's remains from the sea near Shishi City, Fujian Province. His body was still in uniform, and a metal object could be clearly seen penetrating his head. For more than three years, his mother persistently spoke out, strove to clear his name and protested, but military officials have still taken no action. The nail that punctured her son's head also deeply pierced her heart.
