The Lifeng coalmine, located in Sanhsia Township, Taipei County, was the largest professional coalmine in Taiwan. After the government opened the island to imports, the local industry faced difficulties competing with cheap foreign coal. And after further liberalizations initiated upon Taiwan's joining the WTO, the Lifeng coalmine formally ceased operation at the end of 2000, its 118 workers left unemployed. This film focuses on the Lifeng coalmine, the brothers Huang Wu-yi and Huang Jing Chuan, and Chiu An-tsai, documenting the feelings of these elderly coal miners as they face unemployment, and look back on their lives as mine workers.
